Accessibly Chic Interiors

Project 01 — Washington, DC

DC Michigan Park

Living room with a cream sofa, two woven leather sling chairs and a large rust and umber abstract canvas above a black-tiled fireplace.

About this project

An empty rowhouse shell — bare white walls, new oak floors, a black-tiled fireplace — becomes a layered, art-forward living floor. Woven leather sling chairs, a curved bouclé sofa, and large-scale abstract canvases in rust and umber warm the white envelope, while the kitchen turns graphic in black cabinetry with brass pulls and a veined stone island.

Living room

The finished living room, with a pale sectional, a low black side table, olive drapery and framed art stacked beside a round mirror above the fireplace.
The living room, facing the fireplace wall.

Living floor

The living floor, empty and finished.

The two photographs look down the room from opposite ends, so they are set side by side rather than wiped together.

The living floor empty, with a stair rising at the left, a small window in the centre and the fireplace at the right.
The finished living floor with a long cream sofa, woven leather sling chairs, a patterned rug and a large rust and orange canvas leading through to the dining room.

Kitchen

The same kitchen, seen from the dining side.

The before and after were photographed from opposite ends of the room, so they are shown side by side rather than as a wipe.

The kitchen and dining area empty, with white cabinetry, a stone-topped island and light oak floors.
